LORD GARRISON

ON 1 SEPTEMBER 1676, NATHAN 1 AND NATHAN 2 LORD PURCHASED FROM ABRAHAM CONLEY 77 ACRES OF LAND AT "OLD FIELDS" ON WHICH NATHAN 2 BUILT THE LORD GARRISON BETWEEN 1676-1678. NATHAN 1 LORD RELINQUISHED HIS RIGHTS TO THE LAND TO HIS SON NATHAN 2 IN 1681. IN NOVEMBER 1711 A REVIEW OF FRONTIER GARRISONS SHOWED THE LORD GARRISON WAS OCCUPIED BY FIVE FAMILIES, SIX MEN, TWENTY-FIVE SOULS, BUT NO SOLDIERS. THE RECORD STATES THAT IT WAS OF "ELABORATE STRUCTURE, ADORNED WITH CARVINGS IN WOOD, A PROW OF A SHIP BEING REPRESENTED ON ITS FRONTAL ASPECT. IT HAS A DOOR THAT PERMITTED A YOKE OF OXEN AND LOAD TO ENTER." HUMPHREY LORD (1765-1846) LIVED FOR A TIME IN THE LORD GARRISON WITH HIS FAMILY THE GARRISON WAS DEMOLISHED CA 1816 WHEN HUMPHREY AFTER HIS SECOND MARRIAGE BUILT HIS OWN HOUSE NEARBY USING TIMBERS FROM THE GARRISON THAT REMAIN IN GOOD CONDITION TODAY
